Less is more
Here at the office, we have a saying: ‘don’t make me think!’ (So does Steve Krug, author of the book Don’t Make Me Think.) Keeping things simple seem to be the best way of getting your message across effectively and this was recently proven to me by the advertisement I saw in the underground.
This ad struck me as soon as I walked on to the platform and I instantly got the message.
Why this was effective:
• Simple and straight to the point
• Minimal text – use of images to get your message across
• ‘Don’t make me think’ effect
The above points ring true for web design & development also. As the boss always tells us, the majority of people are too lazy to read (I’m in that majority) – thus make it as easy as possible for them to do what it is you want them to do on the site. Otherwise you risk them losing interest, getting frustrated, or worse, leaving your site all together.
So, I leave you with my thought for the week: Less is more.
